Anime Mania!
Many of us with broadband connections have an insatiable thirst for more download content. For me, more than 2 years ago when I first got my singnet adsl line, I started out by downloading M.A.N.Y. songs. Of course this is ‘wrong’ but I guess back then nobody really cares… with my roughly $50 monthly bill for the unlimited 256k adsl line, I just have to download about 2 cds worth of songs to sort of justify the spending. Yes… this is a real distorted logic haha!
Anyway the current trend is to download anime. Anime refer to Japanese animation, as in animated films. I think the current hot favorite anime is Naruto, everyone seems to be talking about it nowadays. (I haven’t watched even a single episode by the way)
Of course, I want to talk about those nice anime that I have watched and will recommend to anyone who is a beginner to anime. For a start, I would recommend all of Hayao Miyazaki’s titles. He is a legendary anime director and most of his works are anime movies. The artwork of his movies is usually very good, all hand-drawn and very detailed. I have watched almost all of his anime movies… ‘downloaded’ though heheh… let me list them out:
- Nausicaa Valley of the Wind
- Laputa Castle in the Sky (recommended)
- My Neighbor Totoro (I think this is a must-watch for Hayao’s work)
- Kiki’s Delivery Service (nice and innocent story)
- Princess Mononoke
- Spirited Away (watched in theatre, really good!
- Howl’s Moving Castle (watched in theatre, this is a very moving story) >
I like the fairytale-like story of his movies, the feel-good endings, the innocence of the characters (many times the lead is a child). I became a fan… so my views may be a bit biased… but I hope you like it as much as I do when you see them for yourselves.
As for series… I am quite clueless as to which is good… I am more into Shonen and Shojo genres. Usually I will go to review sites to have a look at the series before I make the jump to download. I think this is important…. you don’t want to spend days downloading something lousy! So take a look at these sites The Anime Critic and THEM Anime Review
Some series I watched include:
- Flame of Recca (action)
- Video Girl Ai (romance)
- Tenchi Muyo (not so good)
- Ah! My Goddess (romance)
- Fruits Basket (romance?)
- Full Metal Alchemist (action) *recommended!*
All in all, anime series usually give you a super unfinished ending… they never fail to make you ask, “Is that the end???” So you better be prepared if you are going to take the plunge into anime series heheh! I like those downloaded anime because they are free and they are usually translated better than what you buy in those video shops. Fansubs are usually very good because they have the passion and I respect them for that! (and support them by watching those animes!) I like to watch them in Japanese dialogue with English subtitles and I think you can only get poorly translated Chinese subtitles for those cheap vcds if you buy them and sometimes you can’t even get the Japanese dialogue… you get Cantonese dialogue -_- omg so shitty…
So fire up your bit-torrents and grab those animes!!!
